I Made The News :)

I Made The News :)

The local TV channel CBS19, WCAV-TV Charlottesville Newsplex mentioned me on their website today so I’m kinda excited lol.

This week’s Charlottesville Plugged In segment focuses on the world’s most watched sporting event, the World Cup. Naturally, there are a vast number of websites and blogs dedicated to the beautiful game, including one Charlottesville blog that features perspective from a native of England.

Naturally, there are a vast number of websites and blogs dedicated to the beautiful game, including one Charlottesville blog that features perspective from a native of England. Charlottesville World Cup 2010 is a blog from 36-year-old Charlie who lives in Charlottesville, but hails from across the pond. Charlie describes the blog as, “the story of a British guy and his daily struggle in getting Americans to call it football.”

Pretty cool :) – and thanks to CBS 19

Group C Preview

Group C Preview

Christmas came early this December for the Yanks, who avoided the “Group of Death” (another group like 2006 and 2002 would have at least arguably represented a third straight ticket to the Finals’ toughest group) and drew England, Algeria and the Cup’s smallest competing nation, Slovenia.

Without question, it is a challenging group—but for perhaps the first time since Paul Caliguiri found the back of the net against Trinidad and Tobago in 1989’s “Shot Heard Round the World”, vaulting a group of college kids into the World Cup and U.S. soccer back into the most glorious of international competitions for the first time in two generations; the Americans find themselves favored to survive the group stage.

Can they manage a group victory? Certainly this isn’t out of the question but their first opponent, the Three Lions of England, are rightly prohibitive favorites, though we may regret saying we know we are so loudly when the groups were introduced in December.

Goalless For Limp Les Bleus

Goalless For Limp Les Bleus

BAHAHAHA. Erm sorry…….France’s opening game of the 2010 World Cup ended in a largely uninspiring 0-0 stalemate against Group A opponents Uruguay, who will undoubtedly be the happier with the result after finishing the game with 10 men.

In an encounter that failed to live up to the drama earlier in the day in Johannesburg, the French and Uruguayans joined South Africa and Mexico on a point apiece. Sidney Govou spurned the match’s best chance during the early exchanges before their South American counterparts grew in confidence only to later see Nicolas Lodeiro receive the tournament’s first red card.

Abou Diaby was the surprise inclusion in France’s starting XI with the Arsenal player slotting into a three-man midfield – Florent Malouda losing out following reports of a dispute with manager Raymond Domenech. Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez, meanwhile, named his side on Thursday.

South Africa Held In Opener

South Africa Held In Opener

I enjoyed watching the first game of the 2010 World Cup with a handful of die hards at the Timberwood Grill this morning. Special shout outs to Adam and Miguel for sticking it out at the ass crack of the morning (i’m a night owl). Here’s a report on the game which wasn’t too bad….

South Africa were denied a dream start to the 2010 World Cup after their opening Group A encounter with Mexico ended 1-1.

A sublime finish from Siphiwe Tshabalala had put Bafana Bafana within 11 minutes of victory, however Rafael Marquez levelled matters to ensure an absorbing contest finished all square.

Opening Ceremony Sparkles

Opening Ceremony Sparkles

The 19th edition of the World Cup has been opened by a spectacular ceremony in Johannesburg. The likes of United Nations secretary-general Ban Ki-moon, Mexican president Felipe Calderon, Prince Albert of Monaco and United States vice-president Joe Biden were all expected to attend, while Archbishop Desmond Tutu and president Jacob Zuma were amongst those spotted.

However, there was one notable absentee at the opening – former president Nelson Mandela, who pulled out following the death of his great-granddaughter, Zenani, in a car crash. The 13-year-old was killed on the way home from Thursday’s Soweto concert heralding the launch of the tournament, which is being held in Africa for the first time.

Mr Mandela, 91, had been expected to take some part in the opening-day festivities, although his family expressed concerns about his health. But his absence did not stop the 1,581 artists from enthralling the crowd – at least half of whom disappointingly missed out on proceedings after arriving late to the 85,000-capacity venue.

Mandela Will Miss Opening Ceremony

Mandela Will Miss Opening Ceremony

Nelson Mandela will not attend the opening ceremony of the World Cup following the death of his great-granddaughter.

The former South Africa president was expected to be at Soccer City in Johannesburg where the hosts will take on Mexico in the opening game of the 2010 tournament. But the death of 13-year-old Zenani Mandela in a car accident as she traveled home from the concert to open the global showpiece on Thursday evening has cast a shadow over the event. And the 91-year-old Mandela, who has been in frail health recently, will now not be present for Friday’s first fixture.

“Mr Nelson Mandela this morning learned of the tragic death in an accident of his great granddaughter,” said a statement from the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
